First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist; Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist; Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist; Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew; Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Tonight, I read a number of comments that compared the reaction of Nigerians to the death of 47 students in Yobe with their reaction to the death of Dr. Myles Munroe, his wife and 7 other passengers. Whilst I believe that the comparison between both very tragic events is baseless as the reaction either occurrences provoked are totally independent and would have remained unchanged had the events occurred days apart from each other, I agree that a major underlying issue is being raised- it is a bigger tragedy called apathy. It is the reason why if care is not taken, the fire burning in the neighbor’s house may soon begin to burn in our own bedrooms.
Apathy is the reason why thousands have died and all we do is hmmm and ahhh as we watch our TV screens. It is the reason why villages and towns have been deserted yet all we do is see it as another part of the news- a regular part of our week- a typical event. It is the reason why we start protests on social media that yield no fruits and why our children still remain missing after 210 days! Apathy is the reason why we have failed as a nation- the reason why evil thrives, the reason why the future looks bleak for this generation, the reason why I almost dare say we deserve what we get. Apathy is why we have not shut down the nation to demand answers, why we cannot see beyond our expensive frames, why those of us down here believe that we have some form of immunity. Apathy is why the children we birth may have nothing left of the future to hold on to.
It is the biggest tragedy that has befallen us as a nation. It is why after you read this post you would return to your normal routine- replying emails, checking traffic updates and updating your bbm dp with the latest happenings of your life. Apathy is the apparel we have chosen as our mourning clothes- It is the mask we wear on our faces, it is who we have become as a people. It is the reason why we have reacted thus to the death of 47 young souls. Apathy is our collective failure, our mess- Apathy is who you and I have become it is the reason why we are not so different from those carrying guns and machetes. However, apathy is the one change we can make that can save us.
For every one who has a voice, I urge you, this is the time to speak up, for those who have strength, this is the time to march, for those of you who are graced with influence, this is the time to exert that power, for those who are great supporters, it is the time to join a cause, for those who have the choice of a vote, it is time to choose wisely, for those who have ears…. There is no better time to act but now…
ACT, Demand, Fight, March, Pray, Influence, Vote- Keep at it till things get resolved
Whatever you do, you cannot fold your arm and do nothing!
You simply do not have the luxury of doing nothing!
