Stories, Photos, Faith…. Life as I see it

I could have……. I should have…….

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist; Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist; Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist; Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.
Rev Martin Niemoller

Nature has us structured in such a way that we are not bothered if the world around us is turned inside out or upside down as long as the ground on which we stand is stable, we are fine. If only we knew that when there is a crack on a neighbours side of the fence, both our walls would come crashing down.

I grew up in a setting where every one around was friends with every one else. Every now and then, some families were forced to receive the ‘august visitors’ of the night. The usual thing that happens at this time is that they scream out for help expecting their friends to come to their aid. Sometimes, they got some help, however, most times, I would sit on my bed listen to them scream until their voices are drowned by the night. Maybe I should have done some thing.

Then there is Mr Next Door. We share the same fence. We equally share the same gutter. He never takes care of his own side of the gutter. Whenever i drive out of my house, I say hello with a big grin on my face and an insult in my heart. Sometimes when I drive past both our gutters, I feel good deep within because mine is clean and his is not. Then the rains came. I woke up that morning to a river in my home. I screamed and kicked and got angry at Mr Next Door and after some time, I simply went back in to clean my mess. I could have said something.

It is always easier for many of us to push the duty of doing something that would at the end of the day be beneficial to us to the next person who pushes it to the next person and so we keep pushing the task until it is never done. The usual result is that we all suffer for believing that some not me should do it. And then we end up saying I could have….. I should have….. But you did not and I did not. Why do you think our world is the way it is?
